GR:Deep in the tunnels of Moscow's Metro, a mother tells her child that life wasn't always confined to an endless stretch of cement and darkness. People used to live on the surface. But you've just come back from that place; beneath ever-present clouds sits the empty husk of a decimated civilization, every inch of which is enveloped in radiation. If that doesn't kill you, the mutants probably will. The world above is terrifying, but the sad truth is it's not much worse than life below. Warring political factions have splintered what remains of the human race. Mankind may have survived a nuclear holocaust, but it's trying its damnedest to snuff itself out.

Metro: Last Light Review | GameRevolution

GameRevolution: Back in the U.S.S.R. That's it. I promise. There will be no further Russian jokes or puns from here on out; Metro just doesn't support buffoonery at the expense of the motherland. Based on the book by Dmitry Glukhovsky, Metro 2033 introduced players to life after the bomb(s) where what remains of mankind survives underground and just can't catch a break. If radiation, horrifying mutants, and general shittiness of life don't bring you down, maybe the communists and nazis can. Hardened men fight in tunnels with hand-crafted firearms among other deadly weaponry, but you might still trip and impale yourself on the wreckage, or at the very least get a nasty bout of tetanus from the fall. Metro: Last Light revisits Artyom, retains much of what made the first game great and introduces a cast of new characters. Have I mentioned that it looks absolutely jaw-dropping? I can't stress it enough, but that otherworldly fidelity has a major impact on gameplay too. I played...

VR-Zone's own Derek Strickland delivers the verdict on 4A Games' sequel to the iconic post-apocalyptic shooter, Metro: Last Light: "Metro: Last Light is an experience that brings with it a plethora of outstanding features, incorporating familiar game mechanics that are layered with a complex emotional story arc replete with human drama and political intrigue. The game's dynamic usage of stealth and FPS action guarantee something for every type of player, and the outstanding imagery associated with each of the game's unique environments paints the perfect picture of the Metro franchise."

In-depth Review: Metro: Last Light - Electronic Theatre

The original Metro 2033 was somewhat of a shot in the dark, the kind that THQ had earned respect amongst a key demographic for taking chances on. A literary based first-person shooter (FPS) that hedged its bets between story and action, the videogame was met with significant critical acclaim and built a strong following simply due to being a unique experience. Aiming to capitalise on this individuality, Metro: Last Light is a sequel that knows the strengths of its forbearer and builds all them exponentially, while still failing to overcome some of its flaws.

EG:Metro: Last Light is not a bad game, but nor is it a good one in quite the same sense as its predecessor. Metro 2033 was flawed but trying to do its own thing. If anything, Last Light feels like a regression. Similarities abound, but this is a more conservative FPS, one looking at the competition rather than itself, and one with some terrible missteps. So go in with low expectations, and you might be pleasantly surprised. Not the highest praise, is it?

Gamereactor Sweden- Metro: Last Light Review

GR:Although it can sometimes become too obvious, 4A Games manages to keep from writing my nose about what to think and think. The decisions I am capable of making myself. Sure, it's a very linear and structured game, but rather it may be so, and that my choices actually affect anything, but to get a completely open game where I was, after all, most make ineffective decisions. Metro: Last Light is ultimately one of a diamond in the rough where the whole still vastly overshadows the individual ingredients and one of the year's best gaming experience, and a nice proof that all developers are not infected by the Call of Duty -fever.

Metro: Last Light review | Gamereactor UK

GR-UK writes: "Metro: Last Light talks to us in ways that most games don't dare, and it tackles difficult issues with maturity and flair. The basic mechanics are far from faultless, there's a few glitches, and while it looks great, it's not the best looking game we've ever laid eyes on. The sound effects pile on the immersion, and greatly enhance the atmosphere, and the soundtrack is well paced and compliments the action suitably, though it never really grabbed me by the throat. However, the quality of the story means it's greater than the sum of its parts, and while you could easily pick holes in any one area were you to look too hard, the overall experience is intense, exciting and rewarding."
